Jaguar E Type

Complete body restoration on this rare E-type Jag revealed unscrupulous historical repairs. More than 200 hours later the owner is benefiting from the highest standard of restoration.

A dream drive
Our customer acquired this much admired E Type Jaguar Series One 4.2l Roadster in gorgeous Carmen red with chrome wire wheels several years ago and has enjoyed its performance and handling through the summer months. Consideration its long term structural and cosmetic appearance the car was brought in to Devon Classic Cars for us to carry out complete body restoration and repaint to original.

First, all chromework and body fittings including windscreen frame and interior were removed. The chromework was assessed and any defect parts were sent for re-chroming at bespoke finishers. Likewise the chrome wheels were also sent to specialists for reconditioning.
The leather seats and trim were repaired and restored to original colour as were other leather trim parts.

The total car was then completely re-stripped of paint to expose the bare metal, revealing low quality past restoration work and accident damage with minimal structural deterioration. A major item of cost with an E type is the bonnet assembly and this particular bonnet assembly, although structurally strong required several areas of panelwork repair including cutting out damaged and previously repaired metal and replacing with new. Headlamp retaining panels were remade and new stone guards and mud deflection panels were fitted.

Previous repairs were ‘questionable’ to say the least – door and panel gaps were achieved by using filler compounds - unacceptable by Devon Classic Cars standards. All filler was removed and neater gaps were achieved by introducing new steel and MIG welded into position.

Some 200 hours were absorbed carrying out body restoration by our skilled panelbeater. It was then over to our refinishing shop to level out any imperfections. When the contours were perfected, the car was ready for primer and finish coat. After 80 hours in the restoration shop the result was fabulous - all that now remained would be to refit interior and trim, all brightwork including and the beautifully refurbished chrome wires.

The thrilled owner was able to drive away in a dream car!
