1975 Morris Marina Pick-up Truck
Since Devon Classic Cars Ltd was founded in 2006, we had in mind to use a vehicle that would help promote the business in and around the South Hams area of Devon where we are based.
An ideal opportunity presented itself to us in the form of a 1975 Morris Marina Pick-up truck that we found at the Bristol Clasic Car Show which took place at Shepton Mallet in February 2007.
After purchasing the Pick-up we drove it back to South Devon and put it up on the ramp for closer inspection. The good news was that all the main chassis was in good condition and only minor repairs were needed to the headlamp panel, wings, rear wheel arch and one floor pan.
Then we had to make the big decision; should we just carry out a few minor repairs to the Pick-up or complete a full restoration? Well, as the Pick-up was going to be used as a promotional tool, the decision was made to carry out a full restoration. So the original engine and gearbox were removed and a full overhaul of the engine was carried out including a rebore, regrind of crank, new cam, cam followers, timing gear and cylinder head overhaul including hardened exhaust valve seats and Phosphur bronze valve guides. The gearbox was stripped and new synchro assemblies were installed on 2nd and 3rd gears along with a new reverse idler, new bearings and seals.
All new suspension parts were fitted including suspension swivels, callipers and discs, rear brakes, new front shock absorbers and adjustable rear shock absorbers.
Wheels 5J x 13 were sandblasted, primed and repainted and new stock chrome wheel covers fitted. (Sourcing parts for the Pick-up has been an experience in itself!)
Next the bodywork was stripped to bare metal including the engine bay. It was primed and repainted in Rover Mineral Blue instead of the original Mirage Grey.
Inside the car, we replaced the headlining and repainted the dash area in its original black. New sumptuous navy leather covers were fitted to the seats.
Finally, our thoughts turned to the Load Space - do we plywood line or leave it as a painted rear section as originally supplied. Luckily, we found inspiration in a motoring magazine which illustrated a spray on protective covering for all ages and makes of vehicle. Problem solved! The tonneau cover that was as close to the original as could be, was provided by our local trimmer.
Many man hours later we have a magnificent 1975 Morris Marina Pick-up which would grace any garage forecourt.
