Devon Classic Cars is the dream turned reality of expert car mechanic and race enthusiast Peter Collis. His extensive experience spanning 30 years of working with motor vehicles makes him a veteran in the field of classic cars. This is his story.
After leaving school and going to college for a further year, Peter obtained qualifications in technical drawing and motor vehicle technology. He was successful in gaining an apprenticeship with a leading Nottingham car distributor R. Cripps & Co Ltd of Lenton Lane Notts where he served a five year apprenticeship working on Sunbeam, Hillman Commer and International Harvester farm and industrial machines.
As a qualified motor vehicle technician Peter decided to start his own company - initially as a motor vehicle engineer which then expanded to metal fabrication and machining. From itís humble beginnings, the company grew from five staff to nearly 150 staff and reached a turnover approaching 5M.
Peterís company was now dedicated to the Railway industry but in his heart classic vehicles were still his love - every spare moment away from the office was spent in the garage restoring classics of all makes.
Around this time, Peter decided he would like to accomplish one of his dreams of racing a car and decided to join the MG car club. He won many races during the next ten years including the pinnacle of MG racing awards - the MGCC BCV8 Championship, achieved driving a monster 4.2 litre MGB Roadster developing some 350 BHP which he still races today!
After some 30 years in business an opportunity arose to exit this Company through a management buyout proposal - the timing was right for Peter who had recently married Wendy a Devonian Lady! Peter and Wendy and now baby Rachel decided to move from Derbyshire to Devon.
After two years of settling into Devon, Peter and Wendy decided to establish a classic repair, restoration and sales business in Ermington. Joined by Duncan, Keith, Mark and Rob as skilled and experienced engineers Devon Classic Cars was born in 2006.
After 15 years of circuit racing including MG's, Rover 3.5 Vitesse, TVR Tuscan and the VW Funcup Peter has gained knowledge in car preparation and race craft and able to offer this experience and contacts to interested race current and future race drivers.
Peter to date still competes with his two race prepared MG's an MGB Roadster 1963 and a 1973 MGB GT and will be seen racing at Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Mallory Park, Silverstone and Castle Coombe throughout 2007 race dates and venues can be seen on www.bcv8.co.uk
